MDF in golf means that the player made the cut but didn’t finish. Often times, there will be too many golfers who make the cut due to there being a lot of players who have the same score on the cut line. It creates a situation where there will be another cut after the third round. The players who are cut after the third round get a MDF next to their name. In other words, they made the first cut, but didn’t do enough in the third round to make the next cut. How many players are cut after the third round, if any, changes each week. There is NOT always a second cut after the third round. Since the top 70 scores make the cut, there may be more than 70 players who make the cut because there could be a tie for 70th. Say there are 79 total players who make the cut because 10 players tied for 70th. Well, then all that happens is the 10 lowest scorers after the third round are cut in order to cut the field down to a reasonable number where it belongs. The official rules state that "If more than 78 golfers make the 36-hole cut, a second cut, after 54 holes, takes place."
MC means that the golfer missed the cut. MDF means that the golfer missed that second cut that sometimes occurs. The MDF (made cut didn’t finish) distinction began in about 2008 when they introduced the acronym MDF. If a golfer makes the cut but gets injured and is unable to finish the tournament, he or she does not get MDF, they are usually marked as 'withdrawn'.
Golfers who are marked with MDF still receive precious FedEx Cup points, and still get paid for making the cut. In Fantasy Golf (On Draftkings or Fanduel), you still receive points for their 3rd round. For more information on making the cut in fantasy golf, click here.
